                                    ROAD PROJECTS 2007

As winter winds down, the township road crew is looking forward to the better weather that Spring and Summer offer to begin some major roadwork project.  Because the winter weather was relatively mild, there were opportunities for the road department to complete some tasks during the usual "off season" and now to plan for some major roadwork starting this spring.

Residents of the Coolbaugh Road area will find plenty of roadwork activity in their neighborhood this year.  The primary work includes plans to lower several hills on Coolbaugh Road at Sportsman Road and White Dove Road .  Although we realize this is an inconvenience during the work stages, we know that the end result will be a safer roadway.  In addition to this roadwork, we will finish the two miles of paving that was previously started on Coolbaugh Road .  Your patience and courtesy are appreciated during the construction and paving process.

Please remember that our road workers safety is always of concern as well as that of the traveling public.

Other projects scheduled for the Coolbaugh Road area will include work on some secondary township roads. (Shady Hill, Laurel Ridge , Deer Track, Crown Pointe and Bushkill Run) These secondary roads result in approximately 4 ½ miles in total and the surfaces will be tar and chipped. A reminder to residents of these areas that tar and chipped roadways often appear to be very rough at the start, but traffic use "sets" the surface and it will result in a roadway that, although not as smooth as strictly paved roadways, provides a safe and viable way for us to address your roadway projects.

Also located on the west side of the township, in the Wooddale area, both Maplewood Road (approximately ½ mile) and Maplewood Court , located in Pocono Wild Haven, will be reconstructed in specific areas and paved.  We ask for your cooperation during this process and remind residents that roadways should be kept clear of parked cars as well as any sports equipment.

Finally, a significant project is planned for the Hidden Lake Road from Keystone Road to River Road .  This project will involve extensive pipe replacement and shoulder work. By replacing these pipes now, future paving projects will last longer and result in far less deterioration in the road base.  Additional work will be planned for Hidden Lake Road in the upcoming year as well.

As always, line striping will take place during the summer months.  Drivers are reminded to please observe the direction and speed requirements during this process.  It will result in a better striping project as well as decreasing the chance of paint splatter on your vehicle.

A reminder to all travelers, please remember that when you see a missing road sign or find a dangerous situation on any township roadway, you are asked to contact the township road department as soon as possible.  Should you leave a message after hours, please remember to include your name and contact information so we can confirm the location and the needed repair.

The extent of work done on the roads throughout the township can range from widening, new drain work, resurfacing, correcting or replacing ditch lines, line striping and so forth.  Repairing potholes that have developed is an ongoing project throughout the township. Spring through the fall months will find many of the roads repaired throughout the township. You may experience some delays in travel as roadways are resurfaced or repaired.

Occasionally the question arises about township roadways that are not paved surfaces and the upkeep of those roadways.  Middle Smithfield Township has maintained a number of roadways that fall into this category for many years.  These roads, although not main thoroughfares, are in fact, well traveled by both hunting and fishing enthusiasts alike.

Maintaining the road system is a multifaceted task.  Other projects that are involved in the broad spectrum of work includes brush cutting, working with the Adopt-a-Road volunteers, sign replacement and installation, vehicle maintenance, township complex projects, and upkeep of the existing park areas.
