Visit the Monroe County website to read the February edition of the Monroe County Express Senior Times, featuring an article by Middle Smithfield Township resident and Times editor Merle Turitz.
"February is Black History Month so I wanted to share a story that has stuck with me since I first heard it ten years ago when I had the pleasure of meeting Sonny “Albert” Murray at an event in Middle Smithfield. With his permission, I would like to share the Murray family story and the rise of the Hillside Inn in Marshalls Creek. The journey from cotton farms of Georgia to establishing the first Black (Woman) Owned Resort in the Poconos is literally “awesome” – it is complicated and impactful - filled with the horrors of racism, hatred, and prejudice but rebounds with friendships, love and faith. Every resident, especially every Monroe County student, should be required to know the history because it happened right here in our own back yard, not in the 1800’s, but in the 1950’s."
